Can you help me with personal fundraising question?

My future son-in-law is going in soon to be evaluated for a liver transplant (to be put on the list).. He was diagnosed before his insurance kicked in and they won't pay for it. Can I have a prsonal fundraiser for him without going through an organization? What do I need to do/know? I can't seem to find any real information on this. Everything is for groups or organizations. I will also have both our family and friends to help. Any information or help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
