I need advice about a guy?

So this guy told me a few months ago that he liked me but I made it clear I didn't feel the same way. Then we tried to be friends but for some reason we just stopped talking. Now I'm having second thoughts. I don't know if I wanna be with him or just be friends with him but I do know I want him in my life. The problem is we are so out of touch that I don't even know if he has a girlfriend or a girl he likes or anything, so if I went back to him I don't know if I'd be putting a relationship in jeopardy which I don't want to do. I'm so conflicted! Anyone have any advice on where to start?
